“But First, Let Me Take A Selfie!”

Some people live off selfies! ‘But first let me take a selfie’ is a common caption and saying when people want to capture a moment in a picture before experiencing it. They take a selfie before eating, before traveling, before going for an event etc. The selfie always comes first.

Well today, I want to present a different caption/saying. How about instead of saying ‘But first let me take a selfie’, we say..

But First Let Me PRAY!

But first let me Pray! Prayer is simply communicating with God. It is crucial for us to speak to God and hear from Him first before doing anything else. We all say that we want to put God first in our lives but usually we only remember to talk to Him when we need Him to get us out of a mess that we put ourselves in *hides* or when we want to give Him a list of demands we feel entitled to *ouch*. In restaurants are we not too shy to hold hands and pray before we eat because ‘but first let’s pray’ in public is not as cool as ‘but first let’s take a selfie”?.

How did I think of this? Well I was thinking about a blog post I recently read by Joseyphina Amoako where she mentioned that ‘when the Spirit descends and you have the urge to write, please don’t procrastinate! Write it all down and let it out of you. If you let the moment pass and try to write afterwards, the words may not come out the same way you would want them to and the impact you’d have wished would have diluted.’ She won an Afro Blogger Award for Best Creative Writing Blog 2020 and after having read that we know why! I only recently started writing and I’m really amazed at the ideas I’m getting. I have a whole list of blog topic ideas and it really can only be God. I then asked myself how often I pray first before writing anything. To be honest, I usually get an idea and run with it. It’s quite divine I must say. However, I was convicted and realized that I need to talk to God first and invite Him in before I even begin the process. I need to do that or else I will think it’s all me. The blog is His idea anyway!🤷🏽‍♀️

Michael Todd of Transformation Church put it this way. He said that if we don’t pray about something, we are simply telling God that we don’t really need His intervention, input or approval. We are essentially boasting that we can manage without Him. How many times have we gotten a God idea and just ran with it without taking a moment to surrender it to God first. Too many times we end up taking the praise and losing our dependence on God. So from now on I want to say a prayer first before sitting down to write. I will pray something like this;

Heavenly Father, as I begin to write this post I ask that you help me. I ask that you speak to me about what I am meant to write and may you open my spiritual ears so that I may hear clearly from you. I pray Lord that your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Not my words but your words, thoughts and ideas Lord! For I know that it is not by might nor by power but it is by your Spirit that I am able to write. I can do nothing without you Lord. I am nothing without you! All the glory, honor and praise belongs to you! This blog is yours. My life is yours. Use it and I as you please. Clear my heart and mind and give me a fresh anointing to hear from you and deliver your message exactly the way you want it delivered. Have your way Lord! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

As soon as you wake up before touching your phone, pray first. Before eating, pray first. Before sending that application, pray first. Before starting that business, pray first. Before taking that selfie, pray first!!! Let’s be in a place of constant communion with God and He will surely guide us, watch over us and give us peace!
